Our Process

ShadyBay Bamboo Vs. Rayon from Bamboo (Viscose)

Why our bamboo is better than bamboo from rayon

The fabric used in all ShadyBay apparel is made from real organic bamboo, not Rayon from bamboo. The difference is in the process used to extract bamboo fibers from the tree and turn them into textile for fabric. Our bamboo is crushed up into small pieces, and natural enzymes are used to break down the wood and turn it from a solid state into more of a mush. From there, the organic bamboo fibers can be mechanically combed out and rolled into the yarn that's used to make our apparel. The other, and more common process uses toxic chemicals to turn the bamboo into a regenerated cellulose fiber, called rayon. You'll see this listed under different names such as Bamboo Rayon, Viscose, or Rayon from Bamboo. While the rayon bamboo fabric is still soft to the touch, it has undergone a chemical process during manufacturing that takes away most of the natural benefits that come with real bamboo fabric. That's why we felt it was important to provide real bamboo clothing with all of its benefits at affordable prices.

Why choose bamboo?

Bamboo fabric is sustainable

Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. Once harvested, bamboo can replenish itself within a year and some species grow a whopping 35" per day! It is a naturally prolific and resilient plant, which does not need fertilizers to boost its growth, or pesticides since bamboo is naturally pest-resistant. This sets it apart from cotton, which needs to be replanted at every harvest, is much slower growing and requires extensive spraying and watering.

ShadyBay bamboo fabric is eco friendly

Eco Friendly

Since bamboo requires no chemicals and very little water to grow, it is an environmental wonder-plant. Bamboo also absorbs more carbon dioxide from the air than cotton or regular timber and releases more oxygen into the environment which improves air quality. Cotton farming, on the other hand, requires extensive irrigation and chemical spraying. A single cotton T-shirt can use up to 2700 litres of water in the growing process!  Bamboo is by far the greener option.

Biodegradable Bamboo Fabric

Bamboo is 100% natural and biodegradable which gives conscientious consumers real peace of mind. Once you have no further use for a bamboo product you can rest easy, knowing that it will return to the Earth leaving minimal environmental impact. Because our bamboo does not undergo any chemical processes, there is also no chemical waste to discharge after production.
